About Us

Green Shamba Sweden (GSS) collaborates with Kenyan partners to build resilient and sustainable communities on the South Coast of Kenya.


We apply agroecology, entrepreneurship and capacity building primarily throuh the training farm in Msambweni village.


The Green Shamba concept are built on several pillars:


  • An interdisciplinary scientific approach, where environmental and social sciences are equally valued.
  • Recognition of untapped human and environmental potential, with abundant possibilities and resources.
  • Understanding of the serious and growing challenges both locally and globally, viewed within cultural, societal and environmental contexts.
  • Emphasis on friendship, trust and shared values, and the collective will to contribute toward a more sustainable future for both people and the environment.

Our story

The Green Shamba training farm in Msambweni, Kenya, captured in February 2023. Witness the remarkable transformation of a dusty barren landscape into a vibrand showcase of agroforestry in action.

The Green Shamba concept has evolved over many years, beginning in 2008 with a SIDA-funded research project on pesticide use in Tanzania. The journey began when co-funders worked together at a Community-Based Organisation (CBO) on Funzi Island, Kenya under the KESCOM umbrella.     


Drawing inspiration, knowledge and insights from Haller, Mombasa, among others, we proceeded with practical trials, interview studies, networking and extensive research. The operations commenced in 2015. Some milestones on our journey:


  • 2015: Acquisition of a shamba, a typical 'one acre family farm' in rural Msambweni subcounty.
  • 2016: Founding of Green Shamba Sweden 
  • 2020: ForumCiv funded a prestudy project
  • 2021: Succsessful completion for the prestudy project
  • 2022-2024: Securing business sponsorships 


Support us 

GSS operates fully on volunteer basis with nearly no administrational costs.


The membership fee is 250 SEK/year.
